TOP TALKING POINTS

Barca Salary Cap Race

Barcelona are trying to make space within their spending cap to prolong Dani Olmoā€™s registration with La Liga. He was granted temporary registration due to Andreas Christensenā€™s long-term injury.

After signing from RB Leipzig in the summer, Olmo missed Barcaā€™s first two matches of the season because his registration had not been processed. Olmo cost the club ā‚¬55m, with an additional ā‚¬7m in potential add-ons. If the Catalan club is unable to make space within their La Liga-imposed ā‚¬426m salary limit, then Olmo will not be able to play in the second half of the season.

Barca are now looking to raise funds to increase their salary cap. The club is exploring the sale of VIP boxes at the newly refurbished Camp Nou in 20-year commitments ā€“ a deal expected to be around ā‚¬100m-200m.

Liverpool & Inter UCL Favourites

Liverpool and Inter Milan both have a 16% chance of winning the Champions League this season, according to The Athleticā€™s Opta-powered projections. Arsenal, who sit 10th in the league (see table), are third-favourites with an 11% chance.

Arne Slotā€™s side have won six out of six Champions League matches this season and have already secured a place in the knockout-phase play-offs - the round before the last 16. Liverpool are the only team to maintain a perfect record in the competition this season. Inter suffered their first loss in the tournament following their 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

To achieve automatic qualification into the round of 16, teams must finish in the top eight ā€” itā€™s predicted that 16 points would be enough. Those in ninth to 24th enter a round of two-legged play-offs in February. Teams either have two or three games remaining in the league phase. Short-Form Football Landgrab

Kings League, a seven-a-side competition, has announced Brazil as its fourth international market, amid a global landgrab from short-format football competitions. Former Barcelona and Spain international Gerard Pique founded Kings League in Spain last year.

Last month, influencers and former footballers announced a six-a-side tournament to operate in the UK and US. Baller League, which has grown in popularity in Germany, will launch in 2025. See a video detailing the league here.

Viewership of short-form football competitions has been impressive. The Kings League's first season averaged 12.7m live views and peak viewership reached 1.7m concurrent viewers.
